43 Ghanaian Nurses Depart for Jamaica Under Historic Labour Exchange Programme
Accra, Ghana — Forty-three Ghanaian nurses have departed for Jamaica under a new labour exchange programme between the two countries, marking a significant development in Ghana-Jamaica cooperation in the health sector.
The initiative forms part of growing bilateral collaboration between Ghana and Jamaica, with both countries seeking to strengthen cooperation in areas including healthcare, education, tourism and other sectors.
The deployment of the Ghanaian nurses is expected to contribute to Jamaica's healthcare workforce while providing the participating professionals with an opportunity to gain international experience and contribute their skills within Jamaica's health system.
The programme also represents a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries, as Ghanaian health professionals take up opportunities in Jamaica through structured bilateral cooperation.
The development follows recent high-level engagements between the governments of Ghana and Jamaica. During Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama's state visit to Jamaica in August 2026, health cooperation was identified as one of the areas in which the two countries were deepening collaboration. Jamaican authorities indicated that the expected arrival of Ghanaian nurses would provide tangible support to the country's healthcare system.
For Ghana, the programme adds to the country's experience with international health-sector partnerships and the placement of Ghanaian nurses abroad. Ghana's Ministry of Health has previously facilitated international recruitment initiatives involving Ghanaian nurses, including the deployment of nurses to Barbados.
The Jamaica programme therefore goes beyond the movement of healthcare professionals. It provides an avenue for professional exchange, knowledge sharing and stronger institutional links between the two countries.
As the 43 nurses begin their assignments in Jamaica, the programme is being closely watched as a potential model for broader cooperation between Ghana and Jamaica in healthcare and human-resource development.
The initiative further underscores the longstanding ties between the two countries and the potential for those relations to translate into practical opportunities for professionals and institutions on both sides.
