New York, September 2026: Ghana is seeking to deepen its strategic relationship with Saudi Arabia, with discussions focusing particularly on railway development and energy infrastructure, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed.

In a post shared following a bilateral meeting in New York, Ablakwa said he met with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, during the ongoing diplomatic engagements around the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, the discussions centred on advancing relations between Ghana and Saudi Arabia, particularly in areas that could support Ghana's infrastructure development.

Railway development among key priorities

The railway sector featured prominently in Ghana's recent diplomatic engagements.

Ablakwa has previously said Ghana is actively seeking strategic partners with the financial capacity and technical expertise to support the country's railway development agenda. He specifically identified Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain as countries Ghana was engaging because of their financial resources and potential to support railway transformation.

The government's interest comes as Ghana seeks to expand infrastructure and promote economic activity through improved transportation networks.

Energy infrastructure also discussed

The meeting with the Saudi Foreign Minister also focused on energy infrastructure, according to Ablakwa's account.

Energy remains an important component of Ghana's broader infrastructure and economic development agenda, making international investment and strategic partnerships a significant part of the government's diplomatic engagements.

The discussions with Saudi Arabia form part of Ghana's wider efforts to use bilateral diplomacy to attract investment, develop infrastructure and create economic opportunities.

Ablakwa has said the government's bilateral engagements are intended to produce tangible outcomes in areas including job creation, industrialisation, value addition, trade, investment and infrastructure development.
